Subject: Braves @ Reds
I know it's early, but still, it's the first time the
Braves have had a series that means much of anything
in several seasons. 3 teams within a game in the NL
West, and 2 of them matched up right here.
Game 1: Jerry Royster and Rusty Staub get things
started properly for the Braves, hitting back-to-back
jacks in the first inning. It proved to be enough as
the Reds bats never got going. Joe Neikro went 5 2/3
allowing a run. Mike Beard and Pablo Torrealba kept
Cincy scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the
Braves bats continued to score runs. Joe Neikro got in
on the action with a 2 run home run. Royster ended the
day 3-3 with 2 runs and 2 rbi and Don Kessinger,
playing WAY over his head, went 3-4 with a pair of
rbi.
Braves win going away, 8-1.
Game 2: Phil Neikro wins #9 on the season going 6 and
allowing 3 runs, 2 of them earned. A balanced scoring
attack saw the Braves put up 6 runs on 16 hits, more
than enough for Neikro, even on a day that was not his
finest. The Braves put up a couple of insurance runs
in the 9th which proved to be big. Braves win 6-4.
Game 3: Another close one. This game see-sawed a
couple of times, with teh score being 4-4 after 9
innings. A Jeff Burroughs fielders choice in the 11th
scored Willie Davis with what proved to be the winning
run. Charlie Hough got the win with 2 innings of
perfect relief. 5-4 Braves.
Game 4: The sweep was not meant to be for Atlanta.
Cincy appeared a bit upset about the last 3 games and
took it out on the Braves in one game. Dave Goltz was
excellent with 6 innings of 3 hit shutout ball. Don
Gullett was almost as good, allowing a run over the
final 3 innings and picking up a save. Ken Griffey and
Jerry Grote each had 3 hits, but pretty much everyone
pitched in offensively. Reds win 8-1.
