29,579 fans were treated to a fine game at Candlestick Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The sizzling New York NL Mets won by
the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

New York NL tallied 1 run in the top of the 7th inning.  San Francisco had a
chance in the 9th but they came up short.  The win went to Dave Tomlin(3-0)
who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Skip Lockwood earned the save, his
7th.  Tom Griffin(1-4) was the losing pitcher.

Jon Fellows was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good contact,
but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning these
tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt about it!'

Johnny Bench went deep and had 3 RBI at Candlestick Park as the red-hot New
York NL Mets beat the floundering San Francisco Giants in 11 innings by the
count of 10 to 9.

The score was tied at 9 after nine.  New York NL ended up winning it in the
11th inning.  Bench ripped a base-knock.  After an out was recorded, Jerry
Remy stepped in and he drew a walk.  After another out, Bruce Boisclair
stepped up to the plate and he lined a one-base hit scoring the run.
Boisclair took second on the throw.  This was a game of many highs and lows
for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

The win went to Skip Lockwood(3-0) who allowed 2 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Dave Tomlin recorded his 3rd save.  The loss was charged to Rob Dressler(2-6)
in relief.  He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.

New York NL extended their winning streak to 9 games. Jon Fellows held court
after the contest, 'Everything is coming up aces right now.  It is important
for our team to ride this wave as long as we can.  Every win is important.'

Steve Carlton blanked San Francisco allowing just 2 hits at Candlestick Park
as the sizzling New York NL Mets beat the slumping San Francisco Giants 6 to
0.

Carlton(4-5) was virtually untouchable.  He didn't give up much, just 2 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.07 to 2.72.  New York NL had
9 hits for the night.

Ed Halicki(1-4) suffered the loss.  He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks. Bob Mittleman lamented, 'Carlton was really
aggressive today.  He kept coming after our hitters.  Heck, why not. he kept
sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'

Dave Rader had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco
Giants beat the New York NL Mets by the count of 6 to 2.

San Francisco scored all of the necessary runs in the 4th inning when they

Francisco had 9 hits for the game and New York NL had 6.

The win was credited to John Montefusco(3-4) who went 7 innings allowing 2
