The Reds couldn't keep playing mediocre ball forever, could we? We'll probably get right back to doing just that, but at least this series went reasonably well.... Game 1: Dock Ellis allows 2 first-inning runs but Cincy scores in each of the last 6 innings to win 9-6. The Reds broke the 2-2 in the sixth with back-to-back homers from Morgan & Foster and cruised from there. Stan Bahnsen allowed a couple of runs on a 9-inning homer to make the final score close. Game 2: Gary Nolan & Dan Larson fell apart in the middle of the game, turning a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 deficit. But Joe Morgan got us back to within a run with an eighth-inning homer and Ron Reed allowed a 2-run bomb in the ninth to lose it. Ken Griffey got the game-winner, his second longball in two games after hitting a grand total of zero in 1976 prior to this series. Both homers have come in the ninth inning. Game 3: Arch-nemesis Randy Jones was staked to a 1 run lead in the first inning, and neither team scored again for a long time. Jerry Martin opened the CIN eighth with a single, and Foster & Griffey followed with hits to make the score 2-1. Foster drove in a couple more runs in the ninth and the final score was 5-1. Jones, who was 6-0 vs. Cincy in 1975 and 2-0 so far against us in 1976, finally gets a small taste of reality. Game 4: Giving Tom Seaver a series of rest, the Reds went with our best pitcher (Don Gullett) to try to close it out, but Gullett was anything but sharp, the Reds batters spent the day practicing their GIDP drill and other clutch chokes, permitting Brent Strom to breeze to a 6-3 win.
