Jon Matlack pitched a complete game shutout at Shea Stadium where the New York
NL Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 5 to 0.
 
Matlack(8-7) gave New York NL a solid outing.  He allowed just 7 hits and 3
walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.26.  New York NL managed 8 in their
victory. 
 
Burt Hooton(7-4) was the losing pitcher.  New York NL now has a record of a
division leading 43-28.  With this loss, Los Angeles has a 4-6 record of
late, 34-37 overall.

In a tight game it was the New York NL Mets 7, the Los Angeles Dodgers5 at
Shea Stadium.
 
New York NL came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they had
4 base hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  New York NL rapped out
10 hits for the night. 
 
The victory was credited to Steve Carlton(7-6) who went 7 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 5 runs. Carlton was helped out by Skip Lockwood who recorded his 9th
save.  Tommy John(7-3) was the loser. 
 
The New York NL ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 44-28.
With the loss, the Los Angeles ballclub's record is 34-38.

Craig Swan took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Shea Stadium as the New
York NL Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 4 to 1.
 
Swan(2-1) was in control of the game from the outset.  He didn't allow much,
just 2 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.94 to
3.29.  The right-handed Swan had his no-hit bid broken up by Steve Garvey who
homered with two outs in the 6th inning.  Los Angeles was out-hit by New York
NL, 9 hits to 2. 
 
Bob Apodaca earned his 6th save.  Don Sutton(2-10) was charged with the loss.
He pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits and 2 walks.
