Mets topped the San Diego Padres by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
 
The deciding run was scored by New York NL in the top of the 9th.  Buddy Bell
hit a single.  Sixto Lezcano was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Joe
Torre then delivered a single.  Johnny Bench was up next and he hit a deep
fly scoring the run.  New York NL had a total of 12 hits for the game. 
 
Bob Apodaca(3-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Butch
Metzger(3-4) absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and no walks
in 1 inning.

Second baseman Jerry Remy had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Jack Murphy Stadium
where the New York NL Mets beat the San Diego Padres 4 to 1.
 
San Diego was unable to claim the lead after New York NL went ahead in the 2nd
inning plating an isolated run.  New York NL and San Diego each finished the
afternoon with 8 hits. 
 
The victory was credited to Craig Swan(3-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 1
