july 20 Dock Ellis took a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 1 to 0. Ellis(10-6) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Los Angeles hitters. He allowed only 1 hit and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.72 to 3.49. The right-handed Ellis lost his no-hit bid when Gary Matthews singled with two outs in the 8th inning. Cincinnati had just 5 hits for the night. The losing pitcher was Dick Ruthven(6-11). He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. Cincinnati extended their winning streak to 6 games.
