Dock Ellis took a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Riverfront Stadium as the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 1 to
0.

Ellis(10-6) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Los Angeles
hitters.  He allowed only 1 hit and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA
from 3.72 to 3.49.  The right-handed Ellis lost his no-hit bid when Gary
Matthews singled with two outs in the 8th inning.  Cincinnati had just 5 hits
for the night.

The losing pitcher was Dick Ruthven(6-11).  He was the victim of a defensive
lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.

Cincinnati extended their winning streak to 6 games.

Dave Goltz whiffed 10 batters as the red-hot Cincinnati Redsdefeated the Los
Angeles Dodgers 3 to 0 at Riverfront Stadium.

Goltz(15-4) dominated Los Angeles hitters.  He allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks
in 9 innings.  After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Don Sutton(4-14) was the losing pitcher.  Despite the loss, he struckout 13
Cincinnati batters in 8 innings.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of
Goltz - except Los Angeles.  Billy Vanson lamented, 'He just was 'on'
tonight.  He was keeping our guys off balance all game.  A fine game by a
good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'
