In a game for the baseball purist, Brent Strom(14-9) and Rick Rhoden(8-12)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, San Diego Padres finally emerged
victorious over Los Angeles Dodgers, 2 to 1.

San Diego drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
scoring one runner on 2 hits.  Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but San
Diego was able to put down the rally.

Ron Reed earned the save, his 30th. Billy Vanson was clearly disappointed
after the game.  'It was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We
should have had this one.'
