Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The Reds position ourselves (depending on what happens at home vs. the Padres) to possibly become the winningest team in Smiley history. We also have a chance to set the coveted LOB record!!!! Cincy sweeps the Dodgers in 4 eventful games.... Game 1: This was the linescore in the seventh: CIN: 0-10-0 LAN: 0- 0-0 Reds were running up the LOB as always, and Seaver had a perfect game going. With the score 2-1 in favor of the Reds in the ninth, Joe Morgan commits an error, LA gets a SB+E2, then a gb(B)+ game-tying RBI single because HAL snuck the infield in without the road manager noticing. In the tenth, Morgan got to third base with two outs, and Tom Burgmeier balked him home. Seaver went all 10 for the win. Final score: 3-2 (12-2 in LOB). Game 2: Dave Goltz got win #20 combining on a 2-hitter with Joe Sambito in the 3-1 victory. LA got a quick run in the first when Morgan committed his second error in 3 innings (2B 1 e972, I guess), but Cincy came back with two quick runs of our own. The Reds selfless pursuit of the LOB record was jeopardized when we only stranded 2 runners all day. Game 3: The Dodgers took an early lead against Santo "Mr. Perfect" Alcala on a pair of unearned runs. That would be all they'd get, and the Reds came back to win 5-2. Alcala (8-0, 1.53) threw a complete game 6-hitter with only 3 walks. His start at home vs. SDN will be his final one in a Cincy uniform: Alcala has demanded a 20000000% raise for 1977, and will be allowed to seek employment elsewhere. He won't even be on the postseason roster. Game 4: The Reds used a lineup of nothing but zoids (+ Petey & Davey) and used 6 pitchers in the 6-5 season finale. The bullpen conspired to turn a 6-2 lead into a close game, but that's to be expected. Cincy returned to typical clutch form, leaving 12 men on base. Manny Sarmiento was assigned the W, while Dave "Two Pack" LaRoche got a very undeserved "save". Alan |
