Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
In a series that often had the atmosphere of the playoffs, the Reds prove only that it's a little too early for us to commence choking; check back in another month, though.... Game 1: Although Cincy committed zero errors (therefore no 'unearned' runs, technically), the first three Dodger runs were the 100% direct result of blown x-plays, two of them by The Gambler at third base. Then we went from the mundane to the incredible: down 5-2 in the ninth, the Reds came up with 3 runs on a pair of walks, a Mike Garman error, and a passed ball (and, to be fair, a Pete Rose two-run single). With the new tally of "runs that never should have scored" now tied at 3 apiece, and the game tied at 5, both teams menaced each other several times in extras but the Reds finally plated a couple in the 14th. Then - with Gene Pentz on the mound and nobody available in the bullpen - Pentz managed to limit the Dodgers to just a single run in their half and the visitors escaped with a 7-6 win. Game 2: The Reds put up a deuce on the scoreboard three times on the way to a 7-3 win over Don Sutton and the Dodgers. Tom Seaver (9 IP, 8 hits) wasn't his sharpest, but George Foster led the offense (2B, 2 HR) and Cincy pulled away in the middle innings. Game 3: Don Gullett and two relievers limited L.A. to only 3 hits, but although Don Aase was quite hittable, he and Marty Pattin limited the Reds to zero runs. Final score: 2-0, as Cincy stranded all 12 baserunners we received. The Dodgers scored both of their runs in an inning where they collected the grand total of ZERO hits (walk, PB, walk, walk, walk, WP). Game 4: Don Goltz was very effective (9 IP, 7 H, 1 BB), and Cincy launched a 15-hit attack against Tommy John and two relievers. Final score: 7-1. Bill Melton got the Reds off on the right foot with a 2-RBI double in the first inning. All CIN starters had at least one hit except for fast-fading MVP candidate Joe Morgan. Alan |
