Game 1 Fergie Jenkins was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game and shortstop Aurelio Rodriguez slammed a homerun at Fulton Co. Stadium as the Atlanta Braves beat the Montreal Expos 4 to 3.
Atlanta took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 7th inning scoring one runner. Although they lost, Montreal did out-hit Atlanta 10 to 7.
The victory was credited to Jenkins (9-7) who went the distance, allowing 3 runs. The losing pitcher was Bill Atkinson (2-1) in relief. He pitched 2 innings and surrendered 1 hit and no walks.
'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Jenkins said, 'this was one of those times.'
Game 2 Larry Christenson carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and third baseman Mike Schmidt jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at Fulton Co. Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 8 to 0.
Christenson (7-6) escaped virtually unscathed against the Atlanta hitters. He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.63. The right-handed Christenson had his no-hit bid broken up by Willie Montanez who singled with two outs in the 7th inning. Montreal totaled 11 on the night.
Randy Lerch (4-10) was given the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Game 3 Duane Kuiper had 3 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the Atlanta Braves 4 to 3 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Montreal had 2 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Mike Schmidt who deflated the crowd as he cracked a two-run shot (his 29th of the season). Montreal had 10 hits for the game and Atlanta had 6.
Don Stanhouse (4-6) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Steve Foucault was credited with his 24th save. Phil Niekro (8-10) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.
With this win, Montreal has a 61-44 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Tom Austad was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
Game 4 Ivan Dejesus hit 2 doubles and Steve Rogers pitched 7 strong innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the Atlanta Braves 7 to 2.
Rogers (13-5) had a solid outing for Montreal . He went 7 innings surrendering 3 hits and 1 walk. Montreal had 10 hits for the afternoon while Atlanta had 4.
The loss was charged to Doyle Alexander (6-13). He gave up 7 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings. |
