In a great finish the Pittsburgh Pirates came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the New York NL Mets by a score of 8 to 7 at Shea
Stadium.
Pittsburgh scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 5 base hits. Jim Fregosi kicked off the action when he lined a
base-hit. Rennie Stennett next to the plate and he stroked a single. Richie
Zisk then doubled bringing in two baserunners. After an out was recorded,
Fred Patek came up and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning.
Pittsburgh had a total of 14 hits for the game.
Kent Tekulve(2-3) went 1 inning allowing 4 runs for the win. Gene Garber
earned the save, his 14th. Dave Tomlin(4-4) was hit with the loss in relief.
After the game, it took a long while before Jon Fellows emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Pittsburgh locker room.'

In a two run game the Pittsburgh Pirates got by the New York NL Mets by the
score of 5 to 3.
Jim Rooker(11-7) pitched well enough to earn the win. He allowed 10 hits and
2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. New York NL threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.
Gene Garber recorded his 15th save. Steve Carlton(15-7) was the loser. 'I
just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Rooker, 'I got burned on a
couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
