Subject: SMILEY: Braves @ Cardinals

The Cardinals looked strong on paper, and they looked even stronger by sweeping my Braves.  But hey, some of the games were close.

GAME ONE:
George Hendrick rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals
beat the league door-mat Atlanta Braves by a score of 3 to 2.

Hendrick provided much of the offense.  He doubled in the 1st inning, smashed
a solo-shot out of the park in the 4th inning and blasted a two-run home run
(his 16th of the season) in the 6th inning.  Rollie Fingers pitched a perfect
ninth to earn his 25th save.

The win was credited to Pete Vuckovich(5-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Doyle Alexander(6-17) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 6
innings giving up 4 hits and 1 walk.

GAME TWO:

First baseman George Scott hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI and Mark
Littell struck out 11 batters at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals
beat the pathetic Atlanta Braves by the count of 6 to 2.

Littell(6-1) had a strong outing.  He allowed only 3 hits and 4 walks in 7 and
1/3 innings.  St. Louis finished with 8 hits while Atlanta ended up with 4.

Fergie Jenkins(12-10) was the loser.  When asked about his strikeout total for
the game, Littell offered, 'The fan's really got into it.  It is fun to see
them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately, I
kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the
'W'.'

GAME THREE:

First baseman George Scott had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the hapless Atlanta Braves by a score of 5 to 2.

St. Louis brought 3 runs across the plate in the 7th inning with the help of 4
hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Scott who made the home-town crowd
a happy bunch when he hit a single plating two runs.  Both teams finished the
game with 8 hits.

Paul Siebert(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Mark
Littell earned the save, his 3rd.  Phil Niekro(10-17) was hit with the loss.
He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 4 walks.

St. Louis now has a record of 78-63.  With the loss, the Atlanta ballclub's
record is 55-86, worst in the division.
