Expos at Cardinals Game 160
Larry
“the Vulture” Christenson matched up with John Urrea in game 2 of
the battle for the NL East. Enos Cabell hits a three-run homer in the 1st
inning and Juan Beniquez hits a two-run homer in the 2nd to give the
Cards a 5-0 lead.
The Expos
chip away with a run in the 4th, two runs in the 5th and
two more runs in the 6th. The Cardinals score a run in the
bottom of the fifth so they lead 6-5 going to the top of the 7th.
Fortunately
for the Expos Christenson’s imitation of major league pitching is over
after 5 innings of work.
In
an effort to stem the tide the Cards bring in Rollie Fingers to start the top
of the fifth. He is promptly greeted by Mike Schmidt with a near miss
home run that is good for a double. Mike Jorgenson promptly singles him
home and the game is tied 6-6.
The
Cards make an effort in both the bottom of the 7th and 8th
innings but are held at bay by Joe Kerrigan.
Rookie
Johnny Sutton is brought in to hold the fort in the top of the ninth, but with
one out Del Unser slams a no doubt home run to right for a 7-6 Expo lead.
Steve
Foucault retires Bostock, Templeton, and Scott for his 36th save and preserves
the 7-6 come-from-behind win for the Expos clinching the National League East
title in the process.
I must
now go and dry off my sweaty palms and keyboard…
