Subject: CIN @ MON

One extra-inning nailbiter, followed by a couple of seemingly one-sided shutouts.  Not-Quite-Meaningless stat note: The MON defense converted 92% of x-plays successfully in this series; the Reds were several dozen points worse in that area....

Game 1: Dock Ellis had a no-hitter into the sixth, his teammates had generated zero offense for him, so naturally the first hit Ellis allowed was costly: a two-out RBI double by Gary Carter following a Mike Schmidt walk.  Pete Rose collected a two-out RBI double of his own in the Cincy seventh, that hit driving Frank Tanana from the mound.

The Reds took the lead in the tenth on Rose's sac fly, but D'Acquisto gave it back without allowing a hit in the MON tenth (HBP, sac bunt, ground out, wild pitch on catch-x with 2 outs).  When David Clyde came on to pitch the twelfth, Steve Brye greeted him with a double at which point Clyde was yanked and one batter later Dan Driessen gave the Reds the win when he got a good split card (!) on a BPHR chance off of Don Hood.  Five Reds pitchers held the Expos to 5 hits in 14 innings.

Game 2: An extremely one-sided affair, featuring a dominating performance by Larry Christenson (9 IP, 6 baserunners, 6 Ks).  Cesar Geronimo - of all people - handed the Expos three runs in the second inning, and it was all downhill from there with little excitement other than seeing if EVERY Reds batter could roll their Worst Possible Column.  Final score: 5-0, with Doc Medich pitching far better than the score indicates, if not quite as good as Christenson.

Game 3: With as few baserunners as the Reds offense generates, you'd think we'd be more careful with them.  Not so: aggressive baserunning - trying to advance at every opportunity - pretty much accounted for all five runs that Cincy got today; sitting back and waiting for hits sure isn't getting the job done this year.

Dave Goltz echoed Christenson's game two performance (9 IP, 6 runners, no runs).

Cincy's first run came in the fifth when three runners tagged and advanced on Rose's bases loaded sac fly; Driessen scored from first on a double in the sixth; four singles produced a three run ninth against Elias Sosa before Driessen's CS ended the rally.

Alan
