Subject: 1977 World Series update

In the first Smiley World Series to go beyond 5 games since 1971, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Boston Red Sox by the count of 4 games to 2.  Games 5 and 6 were played online this morning, and complete boxscores & stats are posted here:

Game 5: J.R. Richard pitched and batted his way to a 2-1 victory, cutting Cincy's series lead to 3 games to 2.  Richard singled, doubled, and scored on Rick Burleson's 2-run homer, which provided 100% of the Boston offense.  All the Reds could muster against J.R. was a lone unearned run in the eighth.

Dave Goltz (1-1, 1.13) and two relievers limited Boston to just four hits, but the Cincy offense stranded 10 runners which enabled Richard to escape several tight spots.

--------------------------

Game 6: The Series returned to Fenway for another pitchers duel, this one between Dennis Eckersley and surprise Cincinnati starter Milt Wilcox.  Eck permitted just 5 baserunners and 1 run in 7 innings, but Wilcox was just as sharp, allowing no earned runs in 6.1 IP, while fanning 10 Red Sox batters.

The Reds had taken the lead in the third on Joe Morgan's RBI single, but Boston tied the score in the seventh: after a walk and a single had driven Wilcox from the mound, Dock Ellis' error handed the Sox the tying run.  After a walk to Bernie Carbo loaded the bases, Ellis managed to punch out Jim Rice on strikes to end the threat.

The final run of the 1977 season came against ex-Red reliever Will McEnaney in the ninth.  George Foster led off with a double and raced home on Cesar Geromino's 1-out single, just beating the throw to the plate.

In the Boston ninth with Joe Sambito on the hill, Butch Hobson singled and Rick Burleson walked, but with two outs Ted Cox couldn't get the game-winning split on a TR 1-8, fb(B) 9-20, and his flyout sealed the championship for the Reds.

Congrats to the Red Sox on a fine season, and the men from Cincinnati hopefully enjoyed this World Series, because it is almost certain to be our last for quite some time.

Alan
