JULY 30 Rick Reuschel had a strong outing as the Chicago NL Cubs topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 5 to 1 at Wrigley Field. Chicago NL went ahead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Bill Buckner delivered a one-base hit. Larry Biittner next to the plate and he was hit by a pitch. Ken Reitz then drew a walk to load the bases. Reuschel followed and he stroked a single scoring the run. Chicago NL had 10 hits for the night. Reuschel(11-14) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Rick Rhoden(4-12) was charged with the loss. Alan Bosslet was very impressed with his pitcher, Reuschel, 'He had unusually good pitch placement tonight. AUGUST 1 The Los Angeles Dodgers had an easy time of it at Wrigley Field defeating the pathetic Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 12 to 7. Los Angeles came up with 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning when they had 4 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Roger Freed who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he doubled clearing the bases. Chicago NL was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. Jim Lonborg(1-3) went 5 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. The loss was charged to Ray Burris(8-16). He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings.
