Game 1 Rennie Stennett had 3 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Montreal Expos 3 to 2.
Pittsburgh tallied 2 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to Jesus Alou who brought the crowd to their feet when he banged out a single bringing in two baserunners. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Bruce Kison (3-4) allowed 1 run in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Kent Tekulve earned his 32nd save. Frank Tanana (10-12) suffered the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.
Jim Tripodi was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
Game 2 Left fielder Dan Ford had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 12 to 4.
Larry Christenson (13-6) looked very much in control throughout the night. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Christenson whiffed an impressive total of 9 Pittsburgh batters. Montreal provided plenty of action in the 7th inning with 5 runs on 6 hits. For the game Montreal out-hit Pittsburgh 20 to 6.
John Candelaria (6-6) took the loss. He allowed 12 hits and no walks in 6 innings. The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 55-61. Pittsburgh has a record of 60-56 after the loss.
Game 3 Steve Rogers tossed a complete game as the Montreal Expos topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Rogers (7-10) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Montreal finished with 11 hits in the victory.
The losing pitcher was Bert Blyleven (14-7). He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings.
Game 4
Omar Moreno had 2 base hits at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos 4 to 2.
In the bottom of the 4th inning Pittsburgh scored 3 runs. The highlight belonged to Lyman Bostock who thrilled the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 6th of the season). Montreal could do no damage in the 9th.
Jim Rooker (10-8) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Rooker got help from Eddie Solomon who earned his 2nd save. Scott Sanderson (0-1) was the losing pitcher.
With this win, Pittsburgh has a division leading 61-57 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 6-4 lately, 56-62 overall. |
