Subject: Reds @ Pirates
The primary victims of the Reds luck this week were the Cardinals (hanging on by their fingernails) and Mets (now eliminated); we showed up for game one, then bid the 1978 season 'good riddance' a little prematurely.... Game 1: Milt Wilcox & two relievers held Pittsburgh to four hits while George Foster was the entire offense for the Reds (2 HR, 4 RBI). Foster's 3-run blast in the first against Bert Blyleven got the visitors off and running to their final road win of 1978. Game 2: The teams traded 2-run first innings, but then starters Tom Seaver & Don Robinson settled down. Cincy's 3-2 lead held up until Phil Garner doubled, stole third & scored on a wild throw (this would happen again). Omar Moreno's sac fly plated the game winner in the eighth. Stat Of The Day: LOB - CIN: 11, PIN: 1. Game 3: All the rolls went the Pirates way, as they built an early 5-2 lead against a hapless Dave Goltz and went on to win by the score of 6-3. Despite being held to 6 hits, and even scoring 3 times, the Reds managed to strand 12 runners. Kent Tekulve got save #40 by pitching a scoreless ninth. Game 4: A 5-2 lead for the Reds dissolved rapidly when the Arson Squad arrived on the scene and coughed up 7 late runs. Paul Moskau started for Cincy and although he didn't pitch terribly well (he did go 2 for 3 with 2 RBI) he left with what would have been a solid lead for most teams. John Candelaria was battered for 11 hits in 6 IP, and was not around for the big comeback; Dave LaRoche got the relief win. Alan |
