Subject: SMILEY - WEEK THREE - SLN @ CIN

Great series - Two extra inning games, bad relief pitching in game 3 cost the Redbirds the game. And Cincinnati showed who was boss, while St. Louis rested their regulars.

REDBIRDS OBERSERVATION: Dick Tidrow, blew the lead in game 2 - and didn't pitch well in this series. Carney Lansford and George Hendricks offensive players of the week. Mark Littel and Bob Forsch are the pitchers of the week. Manager Rob Tomlinson was disappointed in the performance of the bullpen in this series. They blew the lead in the first two games, and had to pick up timely hits in extra innings to pull them out, and Rollie Fingers got battered around trying to earn his 2nd save of the year in game 3. Game 4 - wasn't pretty - but the Cards were using this game to rest primary starters after two extra inning affairs.

APRIL 19th, 1979
Third baseman Carney Lansford had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Riverfront Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds in 12 innings by the score of 6 to 4.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Finally, St. Louis pulled the game out in the 12th inning. Enos Cabell got things going when he doubled. Mark Littell came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Garry Templeton got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Lansford was up next and
he slapped a single which scored a run. Ted Simmons came to the plate and doubled, and an error was also committed, scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis banged out 11 on the night.
Littell(2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Littell got help from Dave Roberts who earned his 1st save. Frank Pastore(0-1) was given the loss in relief.

APRIL 20th, 1979
At Riverfront Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Cincinnati Reds in 12 innings 6 to 3. The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. St. Louis won the hard
fought contest in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Garry Templeton keyed the rally when he tripled. Carney Lansford was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out.  Ted Simmons then stroked a one-base hit bringing in a run.  George Hendrick stepped in and he cracked a two-run shot
(his 1st of the season). St. Louis had 15 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 12.
The win was credited to Dave Roberts(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs. Mark Littell recorded his 3rd save.  The losing pitcher was Mark
Clear(3-1) in relief. St. Louis scored big getting 3 runs off him in 2 innings.

APRIL 21st, 1979
In an great finish the Cincinnati Reds won in dramatic fashion over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 7 to 6 at Riverfront Stadium. Cincinnati came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 5 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Bobby Valentine began the Cincinnati spurt when he delivered a base-hit. Lee May
came next and he laced a one-base hit. May took second on the throw. Dave Concepcion then slapped a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Concepcion took second on the throw. After another out, George Foster came to the plate and laced a base-knock. John Stearns stepped into the box and lashed a single
resulting in amighty exciting win for Cincinnati and the 45,433 home town fans in attendance.  Cincinnati managed 14 in their victory.
Mark Clear(4-1) got the win allowing 2 runs in 3 innings. Rollie Fingers(0-1) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 5 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning.
'We just wouldn't give up,' Ray Knight said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.'

APRIL 22nd, 1979
Ray Knight lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 10 to 4 at Riverfront Stadium. Knight had a good day at the plate. He cleared the fences for a two-run home
run (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th inning and doubled plating two runs in the 7th inning. Cincinnati totaled 11 on the afternoon.
The win went to Milt Wilcox(3-1) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. John Fulgham(0-1) was given the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving
up 9 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
