APRIL 23 At Three Rivers Stadium the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 8 to 5. Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Los Angeles won the game in the 10th inning. Terry Puhl opened up the inning nicely when he stroked a single. Chet Lemon next to the plate and he slapped a one-base hit. Dusty Baker then delivered a base-hit bringing in a run. Bob Welch stepped in and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Buck Martinez stepped into the box and slapped a base-hit scoring another run. Mario Mendoza added to the uprising and lined a one-base hit. Davey Lopes stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk to load the bases. Bert Roberge then threw a wild pitch scoring the final run of the inning. Both teams ended up with 11 on the night. Welch(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Roberge(0-1) in relief. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks in 1 inning. Dusty Baker provided much of the offense. He stroked a base-hit in the 1st inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning. For the game Los Angeles out-hit Pittsburgh 13 to 10. The win went to Rick Sutcliffe(4-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. John Candelaria(3-3) took the loss. He surrendered 5 runs in 5 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.45 to 4.21. Los Angeles erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning scoring 3 runs. Chet Lemon got things going when he drew a walk. Bill Fahey came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ron Cey then stroked a base-hit, and an error was also committed, scoring two baserunners. Rick Sutcliffe came up and he hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning. Tom Griffin earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 1st save. Chris Knapp(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Eddie Solomon(1-3) was the loser. He pitched 8 innings allowing only 3 hits and 3 walks.
