Game 1 Glenn Adams had 5 hits and 7 RBI as the Montreal Expos destroyed the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 15 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
Adams enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He banged out a single in the 1st inning, lashed a one-base hit knocking in a run in the 5th inning, ripped a base-knock scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning, doubled clearing the bases in the 7th inning and slapped a base-hit which plated a run in the 9th inning. Montreal bats were hot in the 5th inning plating 4 runs and the 7th inning with 5 runs on 4 hits. Montreal simply wore out the St. Louis pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
The winning pitcher was Craig Minetto (1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Minetto got relief help from Pete Redfern who gained credit for his 1st save. Wayne Garland (0-2) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Game 2 Second baseman Manny Trillo had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 1 at Busch Stadium.
Montreal had 2 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning. That was all the offense they were to need. Montreal and St. Louis each finished the night with 6 hits.
Steve Rogers (9-3) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Elias Sosa recorded the save, his 15th. Pete Vuckovich (5-7) was tagged with the loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
Game 3 Bob Forsch had a strong outing as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Montreal Expos 7 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Jerry Mumphrey. He laced a one-base hit in the 1st inning, launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 1st of the season) in the 2nd inning and smacked a single in the 4th inning. St. Louis had 9 hits overall, while Montreal had 6.
Forsch (5-4) allowed 1 run in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Scott Sanderson (5-6) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 7 hits and 5 walks in 3 innings.
Game 4 Mark Littell was great in relief and left fielder Jerry Mumphrey had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos by a score of 15 to 12.
Dave Roberts (2-4) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He went 1 inning surrendering 1 hit and 1 walk. St. Louis kept the scorekeepers busy in the 4th inning when they had 5 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 6 hits. Littell pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 13th save.
Elias Sosa (4-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.
