Game 1 First baseman Richie Hebner had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos topped the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 3 to 2 at Riverfront Stadium. Montreal took the lead for keeps in the top of the 4th inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Gary Carter banged out a single. Andre Dawson came to the plate and slapped a base-hit, and an error was also committed, scoring the run. Steve Eddy (3-0) got help from Elias Sosa who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 16th save. Tom Hume (2-3) was the loser. He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Cincinnati won it in the 10th inning. Joe Simpson lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 6th of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for Cincinnati and the 47,721 home town fans in attendance. Cincinnati banged out 10 on the night. The win was credited to Joe Sambito (3-3) who went 2 innings allowing 2 runs. Sid Monge (1-5) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 1 hit and no walks. Cincinnati now has a record of a division leading 52-27. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 4-6 lately, 45-37 overall.
Game 3 Second baseman Manny Trillo had 2 base hits and Vern Ruhle pitched 6 strong innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 1. The game started off with Montreal taking the lead in the first scoring 3 runners on 3 hits. That early scoring held up. Montreal had 13 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 3. The victory went to Ruhle (1-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Mike Lacoss (7-2) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Cincinnati came out the victor in the 10th inning. Ray Knight laced a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Joe Morgan stepped in and he doubled. Bobby Valentine then smacked a single making Cincinnati the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Both teams finished the game with 10 hits. The win was credited to Frank Pastore (3-3) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Elias Sosa(4-3) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and no walks in 2 innings.
