Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Reds rise to the occasion and salvage a split after winning the first two games. Neither team's pitching was as effective as it sometimes appeared; there were lots of LOB and few clutch hits.... Game 1: Joe Strain made a good impression in his Cincy debut, collecting a pair of hits, driving in 3 runs, and even making 1 of 2 x-plays (which isn't a significantly worse ratio than we've been used to around here lately). Milt Wilcox ran his record to 10-3 and Joe Sambito got save #17 (allowing merely one run) in the Reds 5-3 win. Game 2: Cincinnati eked out a 4-3 win thanks mainly to Lee "Mr. Clutch" May's 10th home run of the year. The Reds led 4-2 with 2 outs & nobody in the SLN ninth, which of course meant it was Rally Time! A walk and an RBI triple was, however, followed by a successful 1-batter outing by Joe Sambito, who retired pinch-hitter Junior Moore on a groundout to end the game. Game 3: Phil Nastu was doing well in his Cincinnati debut until he forfeited a 1-0 lead by allowing back to back solo homers in the Cards' sixth. There being no such thing as a situation which the Cincy bullpen can't make worse, two relievers (greatly aided by Cincy's Lead Glove Squad) turned the 2-1 deficit into a 5-1 final. Game 4: Bob Forsch & two relievers combined on a 7-hit shutout; the lone earned run the Reds allowed would have been sufficient to seal the loss, but the Cincy outfield (Foster, Simpson) coughed up a couple more charity runs just in case.
