Game 1 Mike Schmidt had 3 base hits as the Montreal Expos outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 4.
Montreal had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Andre Dawson got things going when he laced a single. Schmidt stepped into the batter's box and he doubled resulting in a run. Ellis Valentine then would hit into a fielders choice bringing home one more runner. Tippy Martinez then unleashed a wild pitch. After an out was recorded, Tony Perez stepped up to the plate and he would hit into a fielders choice scoring the final run of the inning. Overall Montreal out-hit Chicago NL 15 to 10.
Pete Redfern (8-3) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Redfern got relief help from Elias Sosa who gained credit for his 24th save. Martinez (5-5) was the loser in relief. He allowed Montreal 3 runs in 2 innings of work.
Game 2 Third baseman Mike Schmidt ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 2 at Wrigley Field.
Schmidt enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 1st inning, stroked a single in the 3rd inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 42nd of the season) in the 5th inning. Montreal out-hit Chicago NL for the game, 14 hits to 4.
Ed Whitson (6-12) allowed 1 run in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Rick Reuschel (11-12) was the loser. He allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
The winning ways continue for Montreal . They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With the loss Chicago NL now has a record of 54-70, worst in the division.
Game 3 At Wrigley Field, the Chicago NL faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Dennis Lamp (11-13) finally bested his Montreal counterpart, Steve Rogers (14-7), by the score of 1 to 0.
Rogers gave up the game's only run when Chicago NL scored in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The early run support proved sufficient for Lamp and Chicago NL. That was all the run support Lamp required. Chicago NL out-hit Montreal for the game, 10 hits to 7.
Bruce Sutter recorded his 31st save. The Chicago NL ballclub's record now stands at 55-70. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 7-3 lately, 68-57 overall.
Game 4 It was a laugher out at Wrigley Field. The Montreal Expos squad ripped Chicago NL pitching for a total of 15 runs. Craig Minetto (2-0) with bullpen support allowed Chicago NL 5 runs.
Andre Dawson had a big day with his bat. He doubled which scored a run in the 3rd inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 18th of the season) in the 7th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 8th inning. Montreal kept the scorekeepers busy in the 3rd inning with 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 4 hits. Montreal had 17 hits overall, while Chicago NL had 7.
Bill Bonham (8-10) suffered the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
