Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Reds twice do what we do so well (go LOB crazy, blow leads in the late innings, then lose), but manage to win the middle two games, including a 19-inning contest.... Game 1: Frank Pastore, who has pitched FAR better this season than his W-L record (4-3) or ERA (3.44) indicate, takes a 1-hitter into the 8th inning - and loses, with help from our esteemed relief "ace". Cincy outhits the Cards 9-2, outstrands them 9-3, and loses 2-1. Lary Sorensen, entering the game with an opponents' batting average somewhere around .400, has his best outing of the year for SLN. Game 2: Cincy allowed twice as many hits (4) as we did in game 1, but despite that somehow managed to win the game. Alan Bannister scored a run and drove in the other in the Reds 2-0 win. Milt Wilcox & Mark Clear combined on the shutout. Game 3: Recent callup Glenn Borgmann's 2-run home run gave the Reds a 3-1 lead in the 4th, which Tom Hume and (of course) Joe Sambito conspired to blow in the SLN 8th. There were nothing but zeroes on the scoreboard for the next 10 innings, until Cesar Geronimo came through with a clutch bases-loaded single in the 19th which gave the visitors a 5-3 win. Mario Soto & Mark Clear combined for 9.1 innings of shutout relief, while seven St. Louis relievers did the same until Roy Thomas came in. Game 4: Future cleanup hutter Borgmann* homered once more and the Reds held a 2-1 lead into the 7th, blew it (Sambito AGAIN) then lost it in the 10th on Tim Blackwell's 2-out single off of Soto. Charlie Leibrandt (who got the save in game 3) allowed just 4 Cardinal baserunners in 6 innings, and Bob Forsch had a solid outing for the home team. LOB: CIN - 8, SLN - 2.
