Subject: Reds @ Padres
One routine choke, one very narrow miss at a monster choke, and two blowouts even the Reds couldn't find a way to give back.... Game 1: Chris Welsh made only one mistake in nearly 6 innings (a Driessen home run), but Eric Show let the Reds back into the game and we had a 4-3 lead in the ninth when Jim Kern took over for Joe Sambito, who had pitched one scoreless inning, and wasn't about to push his luck any further. Kern's weak six column was surgically hit by the first 3 SDN batters, but HAL couldn't be sure that surgery would continue until the patient was completely dead, so he stopped relying on dice rolls altogether: Kern balked in the tying run, then wild pitched the losing run across the plate. Final score: 5-4. Game 2: The Cincy offense would build large leads the next three games, but in this one that lead (a mere 7 runs) turned out to be barely sufficient. Bruce Berenyi had an uneventful start (6 IP, 1 run) but McLaughlin and Sambito brought almost enough gasoline to save the Padres day. No gopher balls (for a refreshing change), just 7 hits and 5 runs in 2 innings, after which Sambito amazingly retired the side in order in the 9th to eke out the 7-6 victory. Game 3: An extra-base barrage in the first inning produced 4 runs, and with the bullpen taking a brief vacation, we didn't even try very hard to blow the lead. Mario Soto, aided by 3 timely DP grounders, scattered 8 hits on the way to a 9-2 victory. Dan Driessen went 3 for 3 with another home run. Game 4: A near-copy of game 3, with Tom Seaver being handed an early lead and cruising to a 10-1 win via a 4-hitter. Driessen smacked his third homer of the series, while Seaver excelled at the plate as well (2 for 3, 2 HR, 3 RBI). Alan |
