Game 1 The impressive Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM. In the top of the 3rd inning Montreal went on top for good with 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Manny Trillo began the rally when he ripped a base-knock. One out later, Andre Dawson stepped in and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 36th of the season). Montreal out-hit St. Louis for the game, 11 hits to 8. Scott Sanderson (14-4) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Jeff Reardon gained credit for his 29th save. Andy Rincon (3-3) took the loss.
Game 2 At BUSCH STADIUM, the St. Louis fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Larry Christenson (6-3) finally bested his St. Louis opposite, Bob Forsch (15-10), by the score of 3 to 1. Montreal scored 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning. After two were out Gary Carter started the attack as he tripled. Terry Crowley came next and he lined a base-hit bringing in a run. Luis Aguayo then reached on an error. Ivan Dejesus followed and he reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. Montreal had 8 hits for the game and St. Louis had 4. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 30th. Forsch was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Montreal continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division leading 88-52. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. St. Louis has a record of 67-77 after the loss.
Game 3 In a game for the baseball purist, Lary Sorensen (13-8) and Steve Rogers (14-8) squared off in a tense pitching duel, St. Louis Cardinals finally emerged victorious over Montreal Expos, 3 to 0. Montreal surrendered all of the runs St. Louis needed in the 1st inning scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Tommy Herr started the rally when he slapped a one-base hit. George Hendrick came to the plate and laced a single. Hendrick took second on the throw. Dave Stapleton then doubled scoring two teammates. Dane Iorg stepped in and he delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. That was all the offense they were to need. After the 1st inning, neither team was able to score. Sorensen got help from Bruce Sutter who earned his 34th save.
Game 4 Andre Dawson connected with a 'big fly' and had 4 RBI at BUSCH STADIUM where the mighty Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6 to 3. Dawson had a big day at the plate. He lined a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, doubled plating two runs in the 8th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 37th of the season) in the 9th inning. Montreal had a total of 10 hits for the game. The win went to Bill Gullickson (13-7) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings. Gullickson got help from Jeff Reardon who was credited with his 31st save. Ed Figueroa (1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 3 runs in 2 innings. |
