If this series is any indication, it's going to be an even longer, uglier season in Cincinnati than expected: feeble offense, unearned runs galore (despite a good defense), and mediocre pitching. We have not broken all ties with our successful past however - despite the long-awaited departure of Joe Sambito, the Cincy bullpen is still fully capable of choking away leads in late innings and in our opponent's final at bat (see game 3), or, in extremely rare cases, narrowly failing to do so (see game 4).... Game 2: An even more feeble performance than game one; we allow our customary 6 runs, but today score none at all. Charlie Leibrandt tossed batting practice for 7 innings, the Arson Squad did their customary job, and the offense neutralized any potential opportunities with lots of GIDPs & other outs on the basepatrhs. John Curtis had what will likely be his easiest start of 1982, combining with two SDN relievers on the 6-hit shutout. Game 3: Even a real starting pitcher (Mario Soto) couldn't stem the tide, although he and the bullpen had to blow leads in the 7th and 8th innings before finally choking it away on an unearned run in the bottom of the 9th. Final score: 4-3, as the Cincy offense once again can only manage 6 hits for the day. Game 4: Another day, another 6-hit performance for the Mighty Cincy Bats. But this time we bunched that bountiful offense into one big inning and took a 7-1 lead after 3 frames. Eric Show permitted a home run to the first batter he faced in the Cincy 3rd, but the Pads no-hit the Reds for the remainder of the day. Meanwhile, the Cincy D eventually donated 3 unearned runs to help the Padres, but it wasn't quite enough. Final score: 7-5, as the Reds leave just 1 runner on base. With this offense and our baserunning luck, excessive LOB should not be a problem for the 1982 Reds. Alan |
