Von Hayes hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI and Mario Soto mowed down 10 Los Angeles
batters at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles
Dodgers 5 to 4.

Soto(1-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Cincinnati.  He was
reached for 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings lowering his ERA to 4.13.  Los
Angeles made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.

Joe Price recorded the save, his 1st.  Jerry Reuss(1-2) was tagged with the
loss.  Alan Boodman was asked about the performance of Soto, 'He had his good
stuff out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

The Cincinnati Reds edged the Los Angeles Dodgers at Riverfront Stadium by the
score of 8 to 7.

Joe Price(1-1) was brilliant in relief and registered the victory.  He was
stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and no walks in 2 innings and
recorded 4 strikeouts.  The Los Angeles bats were silent in the 9th.

Price got help from Brad Lesley who earned his 1st save.  Bob Welch(0-2) ended
up with the loss.  He was not very effective, surrendering 8 runs in 7
innings.

First baseman Mike Marshall had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Renie Martin went the
distance as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score
of 6 to 3 at Riverfront Stadium.

Marshall had a big evening at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, slapped
a base-hit in the 3rd inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 2nd
of the season) in the 5th inning and delivered a one-base hit which scored a
run in the 6th inning.  Los Angeles rapped out 14 hits for the night.

Martin(1-0) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. The loss was
charged to Milt Wilcox(0-1).  He was touched for 11 hits and 2 walks in 4 and
1/3 innings.
