Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings. Los Angeles won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Ron Roenicke smacked a single. After an out was recorded, Steve Garvey came up and he delivered a one-base hit. Terry Puhl then drew a walk to load the bases. Bruce Sutter then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed ball scoring the run. Los Angeles finished with 12 hits in the victory. Joe Beckwith(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Beckwith got help from Tom Niedenfuer who was credited with his 1st save. Sutter(0-2) was given the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.
