Bob Welch pitched 8 strong innings at Busch Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers
beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 2 to 1.

Los Angeles brought 2 runs across the plate in the 7th inning.  The critical
plate appearance was by Mike Scioscia who deflated the spirits of the home
town crowd when he tripled which was good for two runs.  Steve Howe was
perfect in relief and gained credit for his 7th save.

The win went to Welch(2-4) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Bob Forsch(3-5) was
tagged with the loss.  He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 4
walks.

Right fielder Cesar Geronimo blasted a grand slam as the Los Angeles Dodgers
topped the St. Louis Cardinals in 12 innings by a score of 8 to 7 at Busch
Stadium.

Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings.  Los Angeles won the
hard fought contest in the 12th inning.  Ron Roenicke smacked a single.
After an out was recorded, Steve Garvey came up and he delivered a one-base
hit.  Terry Puhl then drew a walk to load the bases.  Bruce Sutter then fired
a sharp breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher.  In any event,
it got by him and was ruled a passed ball scoring the run.  Los Angeles
finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Joe Beckwith(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Beckwith got help from Tom Niedenfuer who was credited with his 1st
save.  Sutter(0-2) was given the loss in relief.  He was a hard-luck loser as
he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.
