New manager attached.
Game 1 Bill Gullickson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at SHEA STADIUM as the dominant Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by the count of 3 to 2.
The game was decided in the top of the 9th inning. Richie Zisk doubled. One out later, Tim Raines stepped up to the plate and he hit a deep fly scoring the run. Montreal managed only 6 hits on the night.
Gullickson (12-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2 runs. The right-handed Gullickson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jim Dwyer doubled with two outs in the 6th inning. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 23rd. Jesse Orosco (4-3) was the loser in relief.
Montreal now has a record of a division leading 61-31. With the loss, New York NL has a record of 4-6 lately, 43-49 overall.
Game 2 In a tight game it was the Montreal Expos 7, the New York NL Mets 5 at SHEA STADIUM.
Obviously without his best stuff, Steve Rogers (14-6) still hung on to pick up the win. He gave up 4 runs, 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Montreal finished with 12 hits in the victory.
Jeff Reardon earned his 24th save. Ed Lynch (0-9) was the losing pitcher. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Rogers , 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
Game 3 Darryl Strawberry went yard and had 5 RBI and Steve Carlton racked up an impressive total of 13 strikeouts at SHEA STADIUM as the New York NL Mets, running on all cylinders, ripped the Montreal Expos by a large 22 to 2 margin.
Strawberry enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He slapped a single in the 4th inning, lofted a three-run bomb (his 9th of the season) in the 4th inning and lined a one-base hit scoring two baserunners in the 8th inning. New York NL bats were very productive in the 1st inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5 hits and the 4th inning which saw them plate 10 runs on 9 hits. New York NL totaled 21 hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Carlton (10-9) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs. Charlie Lea (9-6) was charged with the loss. He was unable to control the New York NL offense and allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.
Steve Bivens was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.' |
