Subject: Blue Jays @ A's and Rangers
The Jays continue to tread water, mixing a couple of victories with an unhealthy amount of sabotage defense and, whenever necessary, monstrous late-inning chokes.... OAA Game 1: Like today, for example. TOA starter Jim Gott carried a 4-0 lead and a 2-hitter into the bottom of the 7th, when he suddenly fatigued and two relievers combined to promptly tie the game with the aid of a critical blown x-play by Jesse Barfield. The tying runs were plated on a 2-out, 2-run triple by Ivan DeJesus, who enjoyed the best game of his entire career. With 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 11th, Odell Jones walked Dave Kingman, the next batter reached on what shoulda been an inning-ending grounder (error instead), and King Kong DeJesus then chased home all 3 unearned runs with his 3rd gopher of the season and his 5th RBI in the last 5 innings. Game 2: Luis Leal has pitched surprisingly well lately, allowing just 6 runs in his last 5 starts. Today he permitted just 1 run in 7 innings, Mark Davis pitched a scoreless 8th, and Jones bailed him out of a self-inflicted jam in the 9th. Jays fail to lose a one-run decision (!) by the score of 2-1. TEA Game 1: Plenty of sabotage defense today (5 unearned runs) as Toronto almost entirely blew a 9-2 lead before finally notching a 12-7 victory. Jim Clancy was the victim of all of the blown-x hits and errors, but Davis tossed 3.1 innings of near-perfect relief to preserve the win. Rance Mulliniks was the offensive hero of the day, with 4 extra-base hits and 4 RBI. Game 2: No-Luck Lenny took another tough loss, and although the Jays eventually cut the Rangers' early 4-1 lead to 4-3, Mark Davis (perhaps a bit confused after 2 good outings) immediately gave the pair of runs back which resulted in a 6-3 defeat. TOA outhit Texas 10-8 but several of Lenny's 6 walks came around to score. Alan |
