Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins & Mariners
The Jays split with Minnesota and sweep Seattle by overcoming one of the biggest chokes in league history, but just a routine performance for Toronto (the choke, that is, not the comeback).... MNA Game 1: Toronto was given 2 early unearned runs, and, being the gracious guests that we are, eventually gave them both back and threw in a couple of earned runs as well. Final score: 4-2. Al Williams and Rick Lysander both turned in brilliant outings for the Twins. Game 2: Lary Sorensen dodged most of the bullets aimed at him, while Lysander wasn't quite as fortunate in today's relief outing. Final score: 8-1. Alfredo Griffin led the visitors' attack with a pair of hits including his 5th HR, and Dave Stieb earned his first save with 3.1 innings of almost flawless relief. SEA Game 1: Charlie Hough was dispatched from the mound early, and Rich Gale's season debut was rather eventful, leading Toronto to a early 8-0 lead. With any other team in the league up by that amount the game would have been over, but.... The offense kept hitting, but produced no more runs (LOB: TOA - 11, SEA - 3) and ultimately Jim Clancy & the Arson Squad (Bud Anderson, this time) blew 100% of that 8 run lead. However, the Jays finally plated a few more of our plentiful baserunners and won by the score of 11-8. Game 2: Today the shoe was on the other foot, as it was the M's leaping in front 3-0 against Luis Leal, but Ron Washington's triple keyed the rally which tied the score and Jesse Barfield's solo homer in the TOA 7th was the game-winner. Final score: 4-3. Matt Young went the distance for Seattle, allowing just 5 hits and 2 earned runs; Leal almost went the full nine, leaving after 8.1 having also allowed just 2 earned runs, 6 hits and 0 walks. Carlos Diaz retired the final 2 batters for save #10. Alan |
