Subject: Milwaukee v. Chicago ALCS
The Brewers and White Sox went head to head in the five game
series that put the defending World Series Champion White Sox against the
surprising Brewers. Interestingly, these teams did a blockbuster deal right
before the deadline, as Milwaukee
sent Tom Seaver to the Sox for Floyd Bannister, in a trade that helped both
teams. Game 1 White Sox sent Lamar Hoyt to the mound opposed by the
Brewers Don Sutton. The teams traded single solo shot homers in the second,
and that would set the tone for the rest of the game. The Sox picked up a solo
run in the top of the fourth, but the Brewers answered with two in the bottom
of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. In the sixth, the Sox chased Sutton with
three runs thanks to three singles and a double by Bill Russell. George
Frazier would replace Sutton and end the inning. The Brewers would answer
however with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at
five. In the 8th, the Sox would add a run off Pete Ladd to take a
6-5 lead, and would add one more in the top of the 9th to take a 7-5
lead into the bottom of the 9th. The Brewers put the first two men
on with a hit and a hit by pitch. After a failed bunt by Mark Brouhard, Jim
Gantner stood in against Tom Burgmeier and delivered a perfect hit and run that
scored a run. Paul Molitor followed with another single to tie the game, and
then Jose Cruz singled home Gantner giving the Brewers the 8-7 victory. The
win went to Steve Howe, and Burgmeier picked up the loss. Game 2 Tom Seaver went for the Sox, while the Brewers sent Floyd
Bannister and again it was a back and forth kind of game. The Sox scored two
runs in the first thanks to a Carlton Fisk homer, and had loaded the bases with
two outs but couldn’t get any more runs. Bannister was wild all day long
walking seven and the Sox took advantage. The Brewers picked up a run in the
second, and then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the 4th
off Seaver thanks to homers by Cecil Cooper and Ted Simmons. Bannister however
gave it right back in the top of the fifth as the Sox got a run. The Brewers
finally chased Seaver in the bottom of the 7th by scoring two runs
to give them a 5-3 lead, as Jose Cruz singled home two with two outs. Pete
Ladd pitched a scoreless 8th, but got into trouble in the 9th.
A walk, a single and a wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd,
and Fisk brought them home with a single tying the game. Steve Howe closed out
the 9th, but the game was headed for extra innings. The Sox didn’t
score in the 10th, and in the bottom of the 10th, a lead
off single by Paul Molitor put the winning run on base. After Ned Yost failed
to get down the sacrifice, Cecil Cooper delivered a two run homer off lefty
Willie Hernandez to give the Brewers the 7-5 victory and a 2-0 lead heading to
Chicago . Game 3 First off, thanks to Hamachi (a great tool for those that
have problems connecting to netplay)! The Sox sent Alejandro Pena against
Fergie Jenkins for the Brewers. The Sox didn’t waste any time scoring
two runs in the bottom of the 3rd as John Lowenstein’s double
scored two runs thanks to a throwing error on Jose Cruz. In the bottom of the
sixth, the Sox put the game away, a homer by Jerry Harrison following a single
scored two runs, and then Carlton Fisk homered to give the Sox a 5-0, and
knocking Jenkins out of the game. Pena was in complete control for the Sox,
scattering seven hits over nine innings. The Brewers broke up his shut out bid
in the top of the 9th, but that was the only bright spot for the
Brewers as the Sox went on to win 6-1. Game 4 A rematch of game one starters Hoyt and Sutton, and this
time the Brewers wasted no time scoring runs as they scored three runs in the first
inning off Hoyt, two of which came off the bat of Cecil Cooper. The Brewers
would then add two more runs in the 4th, thanks to a Jim Gantner two
run shot that chased Hoyt. Tom Burgmeier relieved Hoyt, but in the 5th,
the Brewers added two more runs to lead 7-0. In the bottom of the 5th,
the Sox answered scoring three runs, all with two outs, after a lead off
single, Hairston and Fisk doubled home runs and Mike Jorgenson added another.
Sutton got out of the inning leading 7-3. In the top of the 7th the
Brewers put the game away, with two outs, Greg Brock hit a two run homer off
Ron Reed to give the Brewers the 9-3 lead, they would add another run in the 10th,
as Pete Ladd got the final six outs to send Milwaukee to the World Series for
the first time in franchise history. Thanks to Ben for being gracious in defeat, we were able to
work through some connections issues, but it all went smoothly, and we
netplayed the games, clearly the best way to go. Also, for those of you who haven’t heard about this
site, I’d strongly encourage you to get the demo of Hamachi, it was
totally simple and we connected easily without any problems. Here is the
