Game 1 Steve Farr came through with a solid 8 innings at Busch Stadium as the Montreal Expos lost a heartbreaker to St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 2 to 1.
The deciding run was scored by St. Louis in the 9th. After an out was recorded, Willie McGee reached on an error. Brook Jacoby stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a base-hit. Tommy Herr then drew a walk to load the bases. Brad Gulden was up next and he laced a base-knock making St. Louis the winners and sending the 30,164 fans home happy. St. Louis ended up with 8 hits for the game while Montreal had 5.
The win was credited to Roy Lee Jackson (3-5) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Salome Barojas (7-6) ended up with the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
Game 2 The St. Louis Cardinals offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning and cruised to a 8 to 3 victory over the Montreal Expos at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis took the lead off Mark Calvert in the first inning plating an isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. St. Louis out-hit Montreal for the game, 12 hits to 6.
John Stuper (2-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Calvert (4-6) was hit with the loss. He gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
Game 3 Harold Baines blasted a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 5.
Bryn Smith (12-8) had a steady outing. He was reached for 6 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. Montreal had 9 hits for the night.
Smith got relief help from Jeff Reardon who gained credit for his 28th save. Dave Lapoint (12-8) was the losing pitcher. Despite the loss, he struckout 10 Montreal batters in 7 and 1/3 innings.
'He gutted it out' Steve Bivens said of Smith. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
Game 4 Right fielder George Hendrick had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Joaquin Andujar carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 6 to 0.
Hendrick helped send the fans home happy. He hit a single in the 1st inning, stroked a base-hit in the 3rd inning, blasted a solo shot (his 9th of the season) in the 4th inning and slapped a one-base hit bringing in two base runners in the 8th inning. St. Louis had a total of 13 hits for the game.
For Andujar (13-15) it was his 3rd shutout this year. The right-handed Andujar had his no-hit bid broken up by Mike Fitzgerald who singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. The losing pitcher was Ed Lynch (4-8).
