Actually Will hasn't even been drafted yet -- he's still at Mississippi State in April of 1985. He played 65 games at Class A Fresno after he signed. And was in the majors the next year. On Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 10:12 PM, <pjallie2@...> wrote: [Attachment(s) from pjallie2@... included below]
Fernando-Mania lives on in LA as Fernando Valenzuela throws a one-hitter against the Giants to open the series. LA wins 4-0. Bob Brenly's 5th inning single was the only hit for SF, as Fernando limited us to just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 10!
Orel Hershisher had a no-hit bid of his own, besting Fernando by going into the 7th before allowing a hit. A hanging curveball was smashed out for a HR by Ron Roenicke. That was all that Hershisher would give up though. 1 hit, 0 walks through 9 in a 7-1 LA win. Pedro Guerrero had 4 hits for the Dodgers. SF's team batting average for the year after that one was a sickly .201! An entire team near the Mendoza Line! Thank God for our minor leaguers, that Will Clark fella in Triple A looks like he might help down the road. :-)
Jerry Reuss' no-hit bid thankfully ended in the 3rd for game 3. Reuss went on to throw 7 shutout innings, only yielding 4 hits to the punchless Giants, in what would end a 6-0 LA victory. Rich Honeycutt finished off the shutout with 2 scoreless innings. Sf claims moral victory by finishing with a whopping 6 hits. Bill Doran and Bruce Bochte each had 3 hits for LA. Yes, after 13 games, SF is hitting an even .200 as a team, and has scored 1 run in the last 27 innings. Ugh.
Ever the believer in the Law of Averages, game 4 has to be the Giants' time to shine! On the opposing mound, old friend and longtime Giant Danny Darwin. 1st inning, Samuel gets out, Dan Gladden gets ou-wait, what's this? A hit?? Already?! Cue the Ashford & Simpson, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now!". Chili Davis, grooving to the 70's R&B, smacks a homer and the Giants take a 2-0 lead, their first of the series! SF racks up 5 runs before Darwin gets his second out! A quick night for Danny. SF goes on to win 9-5, amassing 14 hits tonight!!
