Subject: Reds @ Mets
After the requisite loss to Dwight Gooden in the opener the Reds get slightly the better of the play, including a shockingly rare event in game 3.... Game 1: Phil Niekro wasted a good outing (6 IP, 1 run) against Gooden, who tossed a 6-hit shutout and was aided (as if he needed the help) by 3 timely DPs. Final score: 2-0. Game 2: Sid Fernandez allowed just 1 run and 3 hits in 6 IP, but CIN starter Jay Tibbs also allowed just 1 run (0 earned) and combined with John Franco to convince the Mets to strand 10 runners. Tied 1-1 in the 9th, Dave Parker delivered yet another late-inning home run and the Reds won by the score of 3-1. Game 3: The closer entered the game with a 3-1 lead in the 9th, allowed a gopher to the first batter he faced, then fell apart completely and gave up 6 hits, 4 runs and the ballgame. The shocker: it wasn't a Cincy pitcher!!! Roger McDowell's sinker wasn't effective for the second day in a row as the Reds turned today's 3-1 deficit into a highly unlikely 5-3 win. Game 4: Back to normal, mostly. The Reds blew two leads, reliever Ted Power depriving Tom Browning of a win, but Dave Parker did it again: a solo homer in the 10th that salvaged the game. Final score: 5-4. Recent draftee Steve Farr has not yet passed his initiation into the Cincinnati Arson Squad (3-0 record, 0.41 ERA) and may run out of usage this year before he does, if he's lucky.
