Sox get shutout in the opener before cranking up the offense. Game 1: Don Sutton and Al Nipper locked horns in a good pitching duel. Boston outhit the A's 6-4 but out stranded them 9 to 5. The only run in the game came on an Alfredo Griffin squeeze in the 5th inning. Despite taking the loss, Nipper lowered his era to 2.16. Game 2: Boston grabbed a 4-0 lead by scoring in 3 of the first 6 innings. Oakland's first 4 batters reached in the bottom of the sixth but they could only muster 2 runs. Boston put the game away with a pair of 2 run bp homers (by Gedman and Hoffman). Boston won 8-2. Despite 13 hits, Boggs had 0 for the game and k'd twice. Game 3: A pair of 4 run innings helped Boston to a 10-5 win. Both innings were keyed by triples. In the 3rd Armas hit a 2 run triple and scored on a sac fly. In the 7th, Lyons hit a bases loaded triple and came around to score as Dusty Baker threw the ball into the stands. Tekulve got a 3 inning save despite giving up a 2 run homer to Mike Davis, who drove in 4 of the 5 A's runs. Even little used Dave Bergmann got in on the act. He scored twice, had a sac fly and reached on a catcher's interference (1 of 4 oakland errors). Game 4: Another 4 run inning with Steve Lyons involved gave the Sox a 6-3 win. Lyons had a 2 run single in the inning and drove in 3 runs for the second straight day. Dan Driessen had the other 2 rbi for Boston. Bruce Hurst allowed just 1 earned run in 7 innings to get the win. Alfredo Griffin went 4-5 for Oakland.
