Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The Reds win a couple of games in L.A., but prove once again (actually, twice again) that NOBODY chokes like the Reds choke. We have found the new Joe Sambito and his name is Dennis Burtt.... Game 1: Newly-acquired Chuck Porter was matched up against Fernando Valenzuela, and while Porter wasn't great he was no worse than his esteemed opponent. But then the Arson Squad went to work: with the Dodgers down to their final out in the 9th and trailing by 2 runs, John Franco choked up a double to pinch-hitter Bill Schroeder and Burtt achieved the 'Perfect Sambito' in the L.A. 11th: one batter faced, one game-losing home run. Final score: 6-5. Game 2: With the entire pitching staff almost out of innings and 3 weeks yet to play, Burtt was called upon in a 3-3 game in the 6th - and tossed 4 scoreless innings & earned a W when Eric Davis homered in the 8th. Final score: 4-3. Fear not, Burtt would return to disastrous form later in the series. Game 3: Tom Browning needed help with 2 outs in the 9th (uh oh) but actually got it from John Franco: Reds win, 3-2. Bill Doran's clutch single in the 5th broke the 2-2 tie and capped the scoring for the day. Game 4: The two unluckiest pitchers in the N.L. (Phil Niekro, Mario Soto) faced off today and performed competently. Super-underachiever Buddy Bell (now batting .164 with a fielding percentage nearly as low) was the hitting star for the Reds, driving in 2 runs in the 6th and giving the visitors a 3-0 lead. Niekro pitched into the 9th with a 3-2 lead but HAL simply couldn't resist having him gopher up the tying run. Burtt got out of that inning but in the 10th allowed a leadoff game-losing gopher to weak-hitting utility scrub Derrel Thomas. Alan |
