Game 1 In a great finish the Montreal Expos came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 5 to 3 at Riverfront Stadium.
Montreal had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. Mitch Webster started the inning off right when he lashed a single. Spike Owen stepped into the batter's box and he laced a base-knock. Steve Jeltz then stroked a base-hit, and an error was also committed. Ron Karkovice stepped in and he drew a walk. Mike Fitzgerald came to the plate and lined a one-base hit. Tim Raines followed, but he was set down on strikes. Tony Bernazard followed and he grounded into a double play. Montreal rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Tim Burke (2-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Jeff Reardon was credited with his 3rd save. Ron Robinson (0-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a batter allowing 1 hit and no walks.
Steve Bivens was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til it’s over.'
Game 2 Third baseman Mike Schmidt connected with a 'big fly' at Riverfront Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by the count of 5 to 4.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Montreal came out on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Schmidt initiated the scoring when he smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 3rd of the season). Fred Lynn next to the plate and he blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season). Harold Baines then tripled. One out later, Ron Karkovice was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Montreal finished with 13 hits while Cincinnati ended up with 10.
Tim Burke (3-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Burke was helped out by Jeff Reardon who recorded his 4th save. Ron Robinson (0-3) was the loser in relief.
Game 3 Andy McGaffigan (2-1) and Joe Cowley (1-1) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with McGaffigan and the Montreal Expos coming out on top of the Cincinnati Reds 3 to 0.
Montreal did all the necessary damage in the 1st inning when they tallied 3 runs on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for McGaffigan and Montreal . That was all the run support McGaffigan required. After the 1st inning, neither team was able to score.
Mark Huismann recorded his 2nd save. The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 11-6. Cincinnati has a record of 9-8 after the loss.
Game 4 In a game for the baseball purist, Tom Browning (2-0) and Floyd Youmans (2-1) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Cincinnati Reds finally emerged victorious over Montreal Expos, 2 to 1.
Browning had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to 2.64. Cincinnati finished with just 3 hits in the victory.
Browning got help from Ron Robinson who was credited with his 1st save.
