Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers
How can a team with the most offensive talent in the majors look THIS feeble? You'd have to see these rolls & splits to believe them, and even then it's mind-boggling. In this week's luckless outing the Jays get a total of 16 hits in 4 games.... Game 1: Today was our huge offensive explosion: 7 hits! Three critical GIDPs terminated potential rallys and reliever Mark Davis chipped in a Sambito-like performance by allowing a late insurance Grand Slam to make the close contest appear to be otherwise. Final score: 7-2. Game 2: The first of 3 consecutive games in which the Choking Chumps from north of the border were limited to exactly 3 hits. Immediately after the offense fought back to tie the game 2-2 - a Herculean effort for us - Dave Stieb choked up 4 straight baserunners after 2 outs to lose by the score of 4-2. Game 3: Today it was Kevin Gross's turn to masquerade as Cy Young, as he allowed only a Jesse Barfield solo homer and two other inconsequential hits in the Rangers' 4-1 victory. What few baserunners we managed were once again erased by timely GIDPs. Game 4: Ed Correa was nearly unhittable today (but then, who isn't?) but he lost despite allowing just 2 hits in 7.2 innings. Barfield homered again in the 9th to supply some breathing room, while Dotson & Henke combined on a shutout. Final score: 3-0. Toronto will continue to be a factor in the pennant race only if our pitching can come up with about 60 more shutouts the rest of the way. Alan |
