Riverfront Stadium fans were treated to a 3-game series featuring 12 HRs by the two teams.   As the series progressed, the question became, "Could the Reds beat Leon 'Bull' Durham?"   The answer:  yes.... barely.

G1
This opener was a low-scoring game with multiple lead changes.  Bill Doran provided the Reds an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff HR in the 4th.  Chicago came back with 2 outs in the 6th to take a 2-1 lead when Andre Dawson's 2-run HR off of starter Ted Power scored Dave Martinez.
The bottom or the 7th provided the Reds with the necessary winning runs.  Eric Davis led off with a walk but was promptly thrown out trying to steal 2nd.  Cincinnati overcame this setback as Dave Parker singled and Bo Diaz slugged a 2-run HR to make the score, 3-2, Cincinnati.  The Reds got an insurance run when reliever Brad Havens balked in Von Hayes in the 8th.
Final - Cincinnati 4, Chicago 2
WP - Noles 3-0, LP - Witt 1-3
HR - Doran (4), Dawson (9), Diaz (2)

G2
Bull Durham was a one-man show for the Cubs in the middle contest.  But, it would prove to not be enough in the end.   The Reds touched Greg Maddux with an RBI double by Doran and RBI single by Parker in the 1st to take a quick 2-0 lead.  In the top of the 2nd, Durham clubbed his 7th home run to get the score to 2-1.  Cincinnati got that run back in the 3rd on Parker's solo HR.  After 3 innings, it was Cincinnati, 3-1.  The middle innings saw only one run scored - a solo HR by Leon Durham off of starter Bill Gullickson in the 5th inning.  After 6 innings, it was Cincinnati 3, Chicago 2.
In the 7th inning, Durham led off and hit his 3rd HR in his 3rd time up.  But, the Cubs weren't done against reliever Ron Robinson.  Shawon Dunston's double one out after Jody Davis' double provided Chicago with their first lead of the game, 4-3.  In the 8th inning, Dawson got into the fun with a solo HR to provide Chicago with a 5-3 lead.  But, it would be all Cincinnati from that point on.
In the bottom of the 8th, with 2 outs the Reds had loaded the bases on 2 walks and a HBP.  While Diaz was batting, Wes Gardner uncorked a wild pitch (scoring PH Tracy Jones) before Diaz's 2-run single put the Reds up, 6-5.  The Cubs went quietly in the 9th as PH Greg Gross grounded into a double play to end the game.
For those of you scoring at home, Durham had home runs in each of his first 3 at bats and reached on a (Robinson) error with 2 outs in the 8th inning in his final appearance.
Final - Cincinnati 6, Chicago 5
WP - R.Robinson 3-1, LP - Gardner 0-2, SV - Noles (1)
HR - Durham 3 (9), Parker (7), Dawson (10)

G3
The Cubs were desperate to avoid the sweep as they built an early 3-0 lead through 3 innings.  Durham's 1st inning 2-run HR and Jim Morrison's 2nd inning RBI grounder provided the Cubs runs. The Reds plated two runs in the 4th inning when Bo Diaz's sac fly scored Doran before Davis came in to score on a throwing error by Jamie Moyer. After 4 innings, Cubs 3, Reds 2.  In the sixth inning, the Cubs got an insurance run when Chris Bando doubled home Dunston with 2 outs.
However, one more time the Cubs' bullpen was not able to hold the lead.  In his 2nd appearance with the team, Aurelio Lopez allowed 3 home runs in the final 2 1/3 innings to provide Cincinnati fans with the opportunity to use the brooms they brought to Riverfront. Von Hayes was the primary late inning culprit as he went 3-for-4 with a HR in both the 8th and 9th innings and 3 RBI.
Final - Cincinnati 6, Chicago 5
WP - Murphy 3-2, LP - Lopez 0-1
HR - Durham (10) Hayes 2 (9), Doran (5)
