Subject: Chicago @ Montreal

This series was well-played- good pitching, fielding, and timely hitting.  Unfortunately (for me), the Expos were better than the Cubs throughout, particularly in the 7th-9th innings (outscoring Chicago, 8-1).

G1 saw starters Jamie Moyer and Juan Nieves hook up in a scoreless pitchers' duel through 7 innings.   In fact, as hard as it may be to believe, Moyer had allowed no hits through 7 complete innings.  However, in the 8th inning, the Expos broke through.  The official scorer - seemingly wanting to make the first hit a clean one - charged errors on Phil Garner and Moyer which placed Tim Raines and Spike Owen on 2nd and 3rd base with no outs.  Moyer bore down and retired Mike Schmidt and Andres Galarraga without a run scoring.  But, with 2 outs, Mitch Webster clubbed a 3-run HR which broke up both the shutout and the no-hitter in one fell swoop.

Meanwhile, Montreal brought Tim Burke in to pitch the top of the 9th, and he and Nieves combined on a 6 hit shutout while striking out 10 Cubs.

Final score, Montreal 3, Chicago 0
WP - Nieves 2-4, LP - Moyer 3-5, SV - Burke (10)
HR - Webster (5)

G2 showed the Cubs come back from the disappointing shutout in the opener to post 3 runs in the very first inning.  Leadoff hitter Ryne Sandberg walked and Juan Beniquez followed with a single prior to Andre Dawson's 3-run HR.   Montreal got on the board in the 3rd when Harold Baines doubled home PH Denny Walling.  Both teams scored a single run in the 6th inning to make the score, 4-2, Cubs ahead.    For the Cubs, Beniquez raced home on an Andy McGaffigan error and for Montreal, Galarraga's sacrifice fly scored Baines.

The last 3 innings were a nightmare for Chicago as the Expos charged from behind against Greg Maddux who had pitched well early.  Mitch Webster was the culprit for the 2nd game in a row- this time coming off the Expos' bench.  In the 7th inning, he stroked a pinch-hit double to score Steve Jeltz from first base, and in the 8th, Webster (who remained in RF) won the game for Montreal by singling with 2 outs and the bases loaded.  PR Herm Winningham and Fred Lynn scored on the game-winning hit.

Burke again finished this game off, but since he had pitched the top of the 8th, he got the win instead of the save.  The Cubs placed Jody Davis at 2nd and Leon Durham at 3B with 1 out in the 9th, but the Expos threw Durham out at home on a Phil Garner grounder to preserve the win prior to PH Greg Gross grounding out for the final out.

Final score, Montreal 5, Chicago 4
WP - Burke 2-0, LP - Yett 1-2
HR - Dawson (17)

G3 was another tight game between these NL East foes.  The Cubs got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd inning on Shawon Dunston's RBI double and Darnell Coles' SF.  Montreal tied the game, 2-2, in the 5th inning.  Tim Raines slugged a 2-run HR scoring starting pitcher, Bryn Smith.

The game remained tied until the 6th inning when Chicago broke through with two more runs.  Immediately after Joe Carter was hit by a Smith fastball, Andre Dawson stroked his 18th home run of the season.  4 runs were all starter Les Lancaster needed to post his first win on the road due to terrific bullpen help.  Wes Gardner, Brad Havens, and Bob James tossed 4 scoreless innings of relief.

Final score, Chicago 4, Montreal 2
WP - Lancaster 1-2, LP - Smith 1-3, SV - James (6)
HR - Raines (4), Dawson (18)

G4 featured the same score as the previous contest, but with a different winning team.  For the 3rd consecutive game, Chicago took the early lead on Leon Durham's leadoff home run in the 2nd inning.  Starting pitcher Dennis Martinez shrugged that off and allowed the Montreal hitters to build a lead over the next several innings.   Baines slugged solo home runs in 4th and 6th innings, and Vance Law hit a 2-run HR in the 7th which scored Martinez.  This gave the Expos a 4-1 lead entering the 9th inning.

In the 9th, Chicago got a run back when Andre Dawson hit his 3rd HR in the series with 2 outs.  But, Montreal summoned Tim Burke to induce Durham to hit a comebacker for the final out.

Final Score, Montreal 4, Chicago 2
WP - Martinez 3-3, LP - Witt 1-7, SV - Burke (11)
HR - Durham (16), Baines 2 (9), Law (4), Dawson (19)
