The Jays become the 21st team of 1988 to get a road win in this hard-fought series split, as the Toronto offense apparently has not yet been informed that the season is underway....
 
 
Game 1: Ron Guidry's first start of 1988 will undoubtedly be his best: a 5-hit shutout, allowing 6 total bases and no walks in Oakland's 2-0 win.  TOA starter John Cerutti did OK today, but only because he was able to dodge several bullets.  Tommy Herr drove in all of the runs today.
 
Game 2: Toronto built a 6-0 lead in the second and sent OAA starter Todd Burns to an early shower.  So of course we stopped hitting and only narrowly averted a monster choke in the bottom of the 9th.  Oakland had 2 runs in and the bases still loaded with 2 outs when Paul Runge challenged Jesse Barfield's arm - and lost.  Otherwise the A's might still be batting.  Bud Black notched his first victory for the Jays, a complete-game 8-4 win.
 
Game 3: At one point in this game Toronto was outhitting Oakland 7-3 - and losing 4-0.  We trimmed the deficit to one run and then, dangerously close to completing the comeback, summoned Tom Henke to do his thing.  Henke's routinely lousy pitching (1.2 IP, 6 baserunners, 3 of which scored) plus some timely defensive sabotage (2 unearned runs) offset our 9th inning rally and resulted in a 7-5 loss.  Dennis Eckersley tried to out-do Henke in ineffectiveness, but found that task to be impossible so he settled for the save instead.
 
Game 4: In the second inning, Dave Stewart allowed 3 free passes and balked home the first run of the game.  He was unceremoniously yanked at that point but Gene Nelson allowed a 2-run single to give the Jays a 3-0 lead.  Jim Clancy gave it right back - all but one run, fortunately - and did exactly the same thing again 2 innings later but somehow never did give back that one final run.  Jays win, 5-4. 
 
Tony Fernandez had driven in all 5 TOA runs in game 3 and plated 2 more today.  His 10 RBI in 14 games this season are almost more than any 2 other Jays combined; not all that impressive considering the rest of this offense consists mainly of .210 hitters who have trouble driving in a run per week.
