Subject: BAA @ DEA Week 12 (and Week 13 CM)
In a three-game series at Detroit, the Orioles starters pitched 20 2/3 innings without allowing a single run – and we still only won two out of three. Game 1: DEA 6, BAA 1 Cory Snyder’s third inning homer provided the only scoring until the bottom of the 7th. After Jeff Ballard was pulled after 6 1/3 scoreless innings due to a high pitch count, Todd Frohwirth got his first blown save in short order on Lou Whitaker’s two-out homer, then walked two in the eighth to help set up Nick Esasky’s grand slam off Bob McClure. Rubber-armed Frank Tanana, who never knew the meaning of pitch count, went the distance for the Tigers. Game 2: BAA 4, DEA 0 Detroit’s Jack Morris walked the first batter, Brady Anderson; a steal and two groundouts later, the Orioles had a 1-0 lead. Craig Worthington’s sac fly made it 2-0 in the 4th, and in the 5th a two-run blast by Craig Biggio chased Morris. Baltimore’s Jim Abbott threw seven shutout innings, and this time the bullpen (specifically Cecilio Guante) held onto the lead. Game 3: BAA 3, DEA 0 Once again the O’s drew first blood in the third, as Tony Phillips tripled in a run and scored on a Snyder single for a 2-0 lead. They padded the lead to 3-0 on a Biggio sac fly in the 7th. (In that inning, Detroit intentionally walked Cal Ripken, apparently unaware of the stats note below.) Dennis Cook exited after 7 1/3 scoreless, and Frohwirth and McClure atoned for Game 1, with Gregg Olson sealing the deal. Stats note: Ripken went 0-for-12 for the series. By my math, a total of nine runners were on base over those twelve ABs, six of them in scoring position, and his lone RBI of the series came on a groundout. |
