Subject: Reds @ Mets
The Reds go 1 for 2 in choke attempts and also get blown out once in a series that was generally unpleasant for the pitchers of both teams.... Game 1: Cincy's Tim Leary had a typical start today, aside from the fact that it lasted 9 innings. This pitcher, who actually allowed fewer hits than IP in 1989 (!), tossed a complete game today while allowing 13 hits, 21 total bases and 5 walks -- and he somehow didn't lose. Final score: 9-5. Eric Davis and Jeff Hamilton homered, while NYN"s David Cone fared no better (but not much worse) than Leary. Leary is permitting 10.5 hits/9 innings and has already used up more than his entire 1989 allotment of gophers, though the season is barely half over. Game 2: The first start of Scott Scudder's career was a dream; now he knows what a surgical nightmare is like too. In less than 5 innings Scudder was annihilated for 13 baserunners, 2 gophers & 9 runs in today's 9-1 disaster. Even opposing pitcher Scott Terry gophered a 3-run shot off of Scudder, and also managed to toss a 4-hitter with no walks when he wasn't busy impersonating Babe Ruth. Game 3: Two more unearned runs coughed up by our Gold Glove '1' centerfielder proved to be VERY costly, as did his 0 for 4 at the plate and his low-probability CS that came just in front of Chris Sabo's inside the park home run. Those shenanigans deprived John Farrell and the Reds of a much-needed win, and our fate was sealed when Rob Dibble picked today to have his worst outing of the year. Final score: 5-4 in 12 innings. Game 4: Our attempt to choke away a second straight contest failed, but not for lack of effort. Tom Browning easily erased leads of 5-1 and 6-4, but Calvin Schiraldi had a rare good outing and Dibble was shaky but eventually nailed down the save. Final score: 9-7. Von Hayes (2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Barry Larkin (3B, 3 runs scored) led the offense against Frank Viola & two relievers, who achieved the difficult feat of being slightly less effective than the underachieving Cincy mound corps.
