Subject: Reds @ Braves
The underachievingest pitching staff in the N.L. is hammered by the Braves
for 36 hits in 3 games --- but the Reds somehow manage not to lose the
series! Game 1: CIN starter Tim Belcher dodged bullets and took a shutout into the
8th, and reliever Tim Layana earned Arson Squad credentials in his first major
league appearance by gophering up 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th.
Fortunately the Reds were leading by 5 at the time. Final score:
7-4. Belcher had 2 hits in the game, raising his average to .188 and
threatening to eclipse leadoff hitter Von Hayes (.193) in that department, along
with most other Cincy regulars. Game 2: As we so often do, the Reds blew a 4-run lead thanks to 3 more
pitchers being surgically dismembered, and finally succumbed by the score of
8-5. With the game still close and the tying run in scoring position,
Lonnie '5' (yes, '5') Smith in right field actually converted an x-play, an
event that likely won't happen again this year. Game 3: An even rarer event, as the Reds were thoroughly outplayed --
taking an undeserved lead and then not quite choking it all away! ATN
starter Steve Avery was making his major league debut and the first 2 batters he
faced reached on blown x-plays. After a 2-out walk to Eric Davis, Paul
O'Neill ended Avery's day with a Grand Slam, all 4 runs being unearned so
Avery's career ERA stands at 0.00. Cincy's Tom Browning was abused for 13 hits and 4 walks in 8.1 innings, but
the Braves stranded 13 runners though they did make the contest uncomfortably
close when we choked up 2 runs in (of course) the bottom of the 9th. Final
