pitcher's duel. Howie Reed(1-1) finally bested his San Francisco

Vern Law allowed just 3 hits and Bill Virdon had 2 base hits as the Pittsburgh
Pirates outscored the San Francisco Giants 3 to 1.
Pittsburgh tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with the help of 3
hits. Bill Mazeroski led off and started the rally when he singled. Virdon
came to the plate and slapped a base-hit. Law got his turn next, but he was
a strikeout victim. Denis Menke followed and he lined a single to load the
bases. Jim Fregosi stepped into the box and drew a walk which plated a run.
Roberto Clemente kept the rally going and would ground out scoring the final
run of the inning. Pittsburgh managed 7 in their victory.
Law(1-2) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Gaylord Perry(0-2) was
charged with the loss. Despite losing, he struckout 11 Pittsburgh batters in
7 innings.
Pittsburgh's manager was very impressed with his pitcher, Law, 'He had
unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was almost unfair - but a
beautiful game to watch from where I sat'.

Willie McCovey collected 2 extra-base hits and Ron Herbel delivered 6 solid
innings at Forbes Field as the San Francisco Giants came back dramatically to
top the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 6 to 5.
San Francisco had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs on 3 hits. Rocky Colavito kicked off the action when he stroked a
base-hit. Felipe Alou followed and he doubled. Hal Lanier then hit a
single, and an error was also committed, which was good for two runs. San
