Subject: Reds @ Cubs

Except for game 3, when we were held to 5 hits (should have been closer to 15) the Reds showed up ready to score and Wrigley Field was happy to accommodate.  The Cubs in particular had a bit of an LOB problem during the series, but the Reds could have scored far more often than we did too....

Game 1: Former Red (briefly) Kip Gross got a rude greeting from his ex-teammates, who reached base 14 times in the first 3.2 innings on the way to a 10-4 victory.  Ex-Cub Greg Swindell went the distance, getting bored as the game went along (9 hits, 17 total bases).  Alex Cole tripled twice for the Cubs while Ken Oberkfell gave Chris Sabo the entire series off for the Reds.  In his debut, this week's scrap heap pickup went 2 for 3 with a double, 2 walks, a run scored & an RBI and the 4e65 avoided any gb(x) plays until a very costly one in the finale.  HAL has spent all of 1991 so far making even Cincy's *good* defensive players look like drunk monkeys in the field; he's not going to miss noticing a 4e65 for very long.

================================================

Game 2: CIN starter Norm Charlton was shaky and Randy Myers continued his season of ridiculous ineffectiveness, but they combined to get the Cubs to strand 10 while the Cincinnati offense put up another bushel of runs.  Final score: 9-3.  Bob Scanlan had a rough outing (7 IP, 13 hits, 22 total bases, 9 runs) thanks to Dewey Evans, who homered his first 2 times at bat, and many others. Five Reds, including Oberkfell again, had 2 or more hits today.

================================================

Game 3: Chicago summoned ace Pete Harnisch to shut down the Cincy bats, and that he did.  Harnisch scattered 3 hits and 1 walk, but the Reds fought back to narrow the Cubs' early 3-0 lead down to 3-2, and looked like we'd catch a break when the tough CHN starter was lifted after just 6 innings.  No such luck.

Ryne Sandberg's 2-run surgical split card homer in the first got the party started and the Reds spent the day rolling fantastically loaded columns and finding the microscopic-percentage outs nearly every time.  Final score: 4-2.  Tim Belcher had his worst outing of the season and no longer ranks among the undefeated.  CHN LOBbed 11 more today otherwise the damage to Belcher would have been worse.

Alan
