Going in ? the Mets led the series 2 games to 1 Sam McDowell, the loser in game 1, was pitching a gem against his game 1 opponent Gaylord Perry. After 7, the Mets led 2-0, with McDowell twirling a 2 hitter. Ken McMullen, who had both of the hits, led off with a walk. Ken Henderson pinch-hit, and singled to RF, sending McMullen to 3rd. The Mets quickly got Wilhelm up in the pen and took a hard look at bringing him in right then. PH Tito Fuentes squeezed home a run, also moving Henderson to 2nd,, but McDowell next struck out Willie Mays for the second out. Then, Ron Hunt lined one out to Johnny Callison in right, a 2e4, who proceeded to drop the ball, allowing the tying run to score and sending Hunt to 2nd. Bobby Bonds followed with a rope over Agee's head for a double to give the Giants the lead ? McDowell stayed in ? intentional walked McCovey, and struck out Harrelson to end the 8th - but McDowell's gem was history. The Mets went 1,2,3 against three Giant pitchers in the 8th. McDowell, survived a leadoff walk and struck out two Giants in the top of the 9th. Closer Ted Abernathy came in to pitch for the Giants. Leading off ? the goat ? Johnny Callison Johnny took Abernathy's first pitch to deep right center, into the bleachers to tie the game back up and the Mets were breathing easier. Before they could start thinking about extra inning strategy however, Tommy Agee was at the plate and with the crowd still on its feet, Tommy took one over the left centerfield wall to end the game 4-3 and series --- 3-1 in favor of the Mets. Every game was tight except game 3 ? The Mets hit an amazing .329 for the series and held the Giants to a .218 average and only 4 HR's.
